Who are the Despicables?

And why are they called this way? The Despicables are a species of parasitic aliens who live all over the universe. The parasitic part of the species comes from the way they are born. The thing that makes this species special is that their offsprings can take on the genetic traits of their host, which has allowed their species to thrive in all kinds of unfamiliar environments.

Despite their name, they are a curious alien species that is obsessed with learning more about the various species and creatures they encounter. As a result, they frequently possess extensive knowledge about the specifics of how many species groups function; they frequently take on jobs that require a great deal of species knowledge. They also enjoy working on projects that include maintaining tools and handmade goods.

Despite being parasites, the majority of individuals are kind and conflict-averse by nature, so they attempt to find solutions without causing unnecessary suffering. But in times when the population is low, they might get desperate...

Life cycle

They come from small jelly eggs which have a striking resemblance to marbles. The eggs are then placed in a host, living or dead, but the best results come from living prey. The egg will nest itself within the prey, creating a vast network of veins to efficiently leech the nutrients from it, megafauna tend to be a target as a host because the parasites need a lot of nutrients to grow. The parasite produces toxins that cause neurological and physical changes. Positive symptoms: Increased sense of smell, enhanced spacial awareness, faster reflexes and additional strength. Negative symptoms: N/A

In most cases, the host does not survive because this entire process happens in the span of ten hours, and it overwhelms the host's body, leaving little time for recovery. After the parasite has finished growing, it will detach itself from the internal organs of the host and climb out by creating an opening. The organism that emerges will possess characteristics that it has taken from its host and will utilize to thrive independently.

History

The species started out as a parasitic arthropod that eventually evolved to steal their host’s DNA to have a higher chance at survival, because why painstakingly evolve unique features when you can borrow them. This made the species very great at survival, with the ability to instantly adapt to any environment that supports life. This adaptation did have a downside, though: the species could no longer reproduce with each other, and they are dependent on other creatures to combine the DNA to make ofsprings. Combining their own species’ DNA together would lead to issues related to inbreeding.

At some point within recent history they had infected some intelligent species which has given their kind the ability of gaining advance sapience. With their newfound intelligence, they started to appreciate all the unique life forms across the universe, often wondering how they evolved and how their traits would be combined with their own. Their intelligence also allowed them to create societies and eventually to venture out into space to discover and interact with other intelligent species.

Their kind faced rocky beginnings due to their parasitic and invasive ways of repopulating, they have had to learn ways to ethically gather organic materials for their offspring's gestation by trading with other species to obtain better materials. Ever since, many of their kinds work all kinds of jobs so that they can purchase organic material to further repopulate their kind in a more morally acceptable way. They have found it very easy to integrate themselves within all kinds of jobs thanks to their adaptability.

Unfortunately their past still lingers with them as a lot of folks see them as parasitic pests that must be eradicated from the universe it doesn't help with the fact that there are still some dubious individuals out there who implant eggs within innocent creatures out there for the sake of creating the optimal morph to maximize efficiency.

This species is from a dream I had on 31/5/2025, although it was more of a nightmare than a dream, it was disgusting. That's why they are so despicable.
